It was kaveri delta which became the important centre for all large kingdoms before 12th century started but do you know when did delhi become an important capital region of any kingdom while kavery delta was the centre of the large kingdom Delhi wasn't mentioned anywhere as an important region or been a capital of any kingdom but it got importance in 12th century it has a long epic history associated with it which can blow everyone's mind if you don't know about it so lets start it .........
Before 12 century kavery delta was the capital of all large kingdoms but later in 12th century it was included into the category of every important regions and delhi first became the capital under the king tomara rajputs who were defeated by chauhans of ajmer in the middle of 12th century it was under the tomara and chauhans that delhi became an important commercial centre many rich jaina merchants came here and constructed several temples , coins minted here called delhiwal , had a wide circulation
Keep reading it week after week because its not complete I'll be adding in it all the important points gradually
from Garrison town to empire the expansion of delhi sultanate
In the thirteenth century the control of delhi sultans rarely went beyond heavily fortified towns occupied by Garrisons . the sultans seldom controlled the hinterland of the cities and were therefore dependent upon trade , tribute or plunder for supplies
To control Garrison town in distant bengal and sind from delhi was extremely difficult rebellion ,war and even bad weather could snap fragile communication routed , Delhi's authority wad challenged by Mongol invasion from Afghanistan and by governors who rebelled at any sign of sultan's weekness the sultanate barley survived these challenges its consolidation occupied during the reign of ghiyasuddin balban and further expansion under alauddin khalji and Muhammad tuglaq
The first set of campaign along the internal frontier aimed at consolidating the hinterlands of Garrison towns during these campaign. Forests were cleared in the ganga yamuna doab and hunter gatherers and pastoralists expelled from their habitat. These lands were given to peasants and agriculture was encouraged and new fortress , Garrison towns and towns were established to protect the trade route and promote the regional trade
The second expansion occurred along the external frontier of the sultanate . military expeditions into southern india started during the reign of alauddin khalji and culminated with Mohammad tughluq in this expedition sultanate armies captured elephants , horses and slaves and carried away precious metals
By the end of Muhammad tughluqs reign , 150 years after somewhat humble beginnings the armies of the delhi sultanate had marched across a large part of the subcontinent thay had defeated rival armies and seized cities . the sultanate collected taxes and dispensed justice in its realms but how complete and effective was its control over such a vast territory
Mosques and their impotence
The delhi sultans built many mosques in the cities all over the subcontinent these demonstrated their claim to be a protector of islam and mosques . this also helped to create a sense of community of believerd who shared a belief system and a code of conduct it was necessary to reinforce this idea of a community because muslims came from a variety of background
Administration and consolidation of delhi under khaljis and tughluqs
The consolidation of a kingdom as vast as delhi sultanate needed reliable generals and governers rather then appointing aristocratics and landed chieftains as governers the Early delhi sultans specially iltutmist favored their slaves purchased for military service , called bandagan in persian they were carefully trained to man some most important political offices of the kingdom since they were totally dependent upon their master , the sultans could trust and rely upon them
